Dr Sarphatiehuis Amsterdam

The Dr Sarphatihuis is a care centre in the heart of Amsterdam, managed by Amsta. The monumental building provides accommodation and care for elderly people with various care needs. Amsta, in collaboration with D/DOCK, commissioned INTOS to renovate and modernise the internal spaces of the Dr Sarphatihuis, aiming to improve the living environment while preserving the historic character of the building.

Our approach

INTOS worked closely with D/Dock to bring the design of the Dr Sarphati House to life. The project included the renovation of communal areas and facility facilities. Given that the renovation took place in an operational care centre, it was essential to minimise inconvenience to residents and staff. Work was carried out in phases to ensure continuity of care.

Unique features

Historical elements: One of the most important aspects of this project was to preserve the historical elements of the Dr Sarphati House. Combining authentic details with modern functionalities created a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Materials and finishing: durable and safe materials were chosen to contribute to the comfort of the residents. Finishing was done with extreme precision to meet high quality standards.

Custom solutions: INTOS provided several custom interior solutions, including custom furniture and built-in cabinets that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Circular sustainability

In line with Amsta and INTOS' ambition to operate sustainably, circular solutions were explicitly chosen during the renovation of the Dr Sarphati House. This included reusing existing materials and selecting new materials with low environmental impact. This circular design contributed not only to a reduced ecological footprint, but also to increased efficiency in the use of resources and materials.

Award-winning design

This innovative project, known as "Moving Islands," has been awarded the Architizer 2024 A+Product Awards Popular Choice Winner in the Flexible Design category. Designed by Furnify - Circular Design & Build and D/DOCK, this wheeled courtyard, for 50%, consists of residual materials and can be adapted in 30 different configurations to suit the needs of the space and occupants.

Moreover, our colleagues from the SIG Foundation contributed by staining all the slats. The success of this project has led to a grant application to introduce Moving Islands at more healthcare facilities, transforming hospitals and retirement homes into green environments with sustainable materials.

The result

The renovation of the Dr Sarphati House resulted in a modern, comfortable and functional interior that is fully in line with Amsta's care vision. Due to the careful execution of the work, the historical character of the building has been preserved, while the building now meets the contemporary requirements of a care institution. Residents enjoy an improved living environment, and staff work in a pleasant and efficient setting.

Collaboration

Thanks to close cooperation with Amsta and D/Dock, this project was successfully completed. INTOS is proud of the contribution we made to the Dr Sarphati House, where we were able to demonstrate our ability to carry out complex renovations in a care environment with precision and respect for the historical context.

This project underlines our expertise in interior design for healthcare facilities, in which we always strive for a harmony between aesthetics, functionality and sustainability. Moreover, it highlights our commitment to circular sustainability, a core value we pursue in all our projects.
