Emma Children's Hospital MPU - Amsterdam UMC

It started during a special crowdfunding gala for Foundation Support Emma, where INTOS was introduced to this special project through a personal connection. The Emma Children's Hospital, part of the Amsterdam UMC, is the only one in the Netherlands offering specialised care to children struggling with both complex psychological and physical problems. The expansion and renewal of the Medical-Psychiatric Unit (MPU) offered a unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of these vulnerable children.

Customer needs

INTOS' brief was clear but challenging: to create an environment that not only meets the highest medical and safety standards, but also exudes a warm, homely atmosphere. The aim was to create a 'healing environment' - a place where children feel safe and at ease, and where relaxation is possible amid intensive care.

Our approach

Together with architectural firm Burobas and consultancy firm AT Osborne we went to work. Our assignment included the renovation of several rooms, including a game room, music room and nutrition room. The kitchen and several accommodation areas were also completely renovated, with an increase in the number of rooms. Every detail was carefully tuned to create a functional and safe, but above all warm environment.

The implementation of the project brought specific challenges. The ward remained in use, making it essential to take into account the daily care and well-being of the children. This required precise planning and quiet, low-dust working methods. Moreover, all materials had to meet strict safety requirements. Consider, for example, the use of hygienic surfaces and child-friendly finishes. A special element is the wall in the feeding room, which is covered with acoustic felt into which an attractive pattern has been milled - functional and aesthetic.

Delivered result

The renovated MPU is not only a medical ward but also a place where children can relax and unwind. The positive response from the care team and the visible impact on patients underline how important a carefully designed environment is.

This project shows how INTOS contributes to environments that make a difference with precision, creativity and commitment. It was an honour to work with partners such as Burobas and AT Osborne on this unique initiative.
