Genmab Track IV

In het Genmab Research & Development Center (GRDC) from Genmab, a international biotechnology company specialized in the development of antibodytherapihe at cancer and other serious diseases, were many laboratories grown and redesigned, at total 2000 m2. All in the most sustainable way possible. INTOS is like fixed supplier asked to through from reuse of existing lab furniture this in cooperation with the technical project manager of Genmab at realise.

Customer needs

Due to the growth within Genmab, it was decided to redesign the GRDC in a sustainable way, allowing the spaces to be used to their full potential. The current furnishings, which were spread over the three floors, had to be reused as much as possible without compromising the labrequirements. It was also essential here that the continuous labprocesses were disrupted as little as possible. Clear communication was needed so that Genmab's project manager could ensure smooth coordination with all subcontractors.

Our approach

This project was approached from our Green lab service. In four different phases, we inventoried the existing furniture in terms of status, dimensions and possibilities for reuse. This resulted in drawings for the new layout of the rooms and any adjustments for each piece of furniture. The furniture was then dismantled, stored, adjusted and reused.

In this phased approach, we paid great attention to clear communication towards employees and other subcontractors to create clear expectations. From idea to completion, this project only  eleven months. And because almost only new materials were used for finishing, such as skirting boards, 90% of the existing furniture was reused!

Delivered result

Gijs Koolen, Genmab technical project manager: "Initially, the task was not easy: 2000 m2 of existing lab completely redesigned, within a very short time frame where the labs had to be able to continue to meet their targets and then also reuse as much as possible and reduce energy. Initially, 30-40% to reuse seemed quite a good estimate, but we soon saw that there was much more to it. The clue turned out to be close, weekly involvement of Genmab lab users on site in the construction zone as well as the enthusiasm of the many mechanics and technicians to want to think differently and walk into the storage instead of calling the work planner to order new materials. Thus, together they made this possible. Something that both Genmab and the managements of the subcontractors can be proud of.. Sustainability really lives among these employees. The end result: on-time, (well) within budget, all labtargets met and also many satisfied labusers".

Manouk van der Wal, project manager INTOS: "It is great to see Genmab opting for sustainability and INTOS being able to collaborate on this. Because of the previous cooperation and trust in our Green lab service, this project went very smoothly. Our technicians were given every freedom to be as inventive as possible and exploit all opportunities for reuse. From our side, this required creativity, own initiative and coordination. After all, despite the inventory, you never know exactly what you will encounter when dismantling. But it also required flexibility on Genmab's side. This smooth interaction has led to a thoroughly sustainable end result!"
